Last night saw Mike Lawrence return to NCPS to give a lively, informative and entertaining demonstration of the use of on-camera flash. Many of the audience had confessed to having a flashgun somewhere in there kit bag, but rarely using it (the author included) whereas Mike uses his for 30-40% of all his photographs – albeit rather a lot of them weddings and other people portraits. Mike felt he’d accomplished his mission for the evening when the majority of those declared at the end that they were now better prepared to get out and give it a go to improve their photography. Why? Because Mike had not only explained the technicalities of how to use it, but had also explained why, somewhat paradoxically, they are often needed when the sun is at its brightest – to fill in dark shadows. Those who were there will remember always, shutter speed controls ambient light, aperture and ISO control both ambient and flash (or was it the other way around?)
